Perfectly delightful characters. Perfectly charming narrative. Perfect road trip story. Perfect read for an Anglophile. You'll laugh. You'll ponder lots of small, wonderful thoughts. A bright spot in an iffy world (especially right after reading A Handmaid's Tale). Wish it were all true. Give us more, William Kuhn!
Once in a great while I read a book I want the whole world to know about and to read. Mrs. Queen is one of those rare books, one of the most charming and original novels I have read. It seems Kuhn knows a lot of details about palace life, etiquette, and the current Queen of England, I can’t imagine how but he does. The plot revolves around the Queen feeling a bit down and going out on her own, strictly against all the rules she has obeyed since childhood. She wants cheese from a certain shop in London and then to take the train or bus to see her ship Britannia (scene of many happy moments in her life) and then to travel to Scotland where she is always happiest. Six interesting people are in a tizzy as they discover the Queen missing and try to find her before anyone else finds out. It turns out these people care for the Queen and for each other: Rajiv and Rachel (knows the Queen by caring for her horses), Luke and William (lonely men loyal to Her Majesty), and Lady Anne and Shirley (long time staff for the Queen and as old as she is). A favorite scene is when the Queen is traveling incognito, wearing a scarf on her head and Rachel’s hooded jacket with a skull printed on the hoodie’s back, and a young man tells her she looks familiar and then tells her she looks like Helen Mirren. There are many amusing scenes when the Queen is almost discovered. This is a story with a light touch; if you want to be cheered up or just like to smile, I highly recommend it.
I really enjoyed this story! The Queen of England decides that she's tired of the routine of palace life, and fears not doing enough for herself. She sets out on an adventure, and the story follows not only her, but her staff, as they chase after her. A fun and light-hearted story that is a great read, or listen! I mostly used the audio book with whispersync for this, and the storyteller is charming and keeps you captivated. This story is a must for those Anglophiles!
I was expecting a very light, humorous story about a very fictitious portrayal of an iconic figure. It is funny at times but it's actually a very well written and engaging novel, not so much about the Queen, but about what it means to be human. I don't think everyone will like this book. For those who are fascinated with British royalty and culture, it will be a very good read. But it also appeals on a heart-warming level to the random reader as well. It's an interesting look at how the queen might think and feel. It gives some interesting insight, not only into the psyche of Queen Elizabeth II but also to a wide array of characters from various walks of life. I think the point of the book is to illustrate that we're all human and we can all relate to each other on some level. It's about not making swift judgements and assumptions that you know what another person's character is all about. While it is nothing like another good book, Chocolat by Joanne Harris, it has similarities in the way that it looks at the motivations of the character's inner workings and how they relate to one another. The author has done a huge amount of research on this book. There are a few stretches to fact and imagination, but it is a work of fiction after all and not a history book. If you're looking for a quick, summer read that will touch your heart, I highly recommend it!
This book has been panned here. I would like to defend its so-called biggest flaw: the amount of time we spend with Mrs Queen. The whole premise is that the Queen has left the Palace on her own, no one knows where she went or if she's in danger. Not reading her thoughts or actions places the readers in the same place as the main characters, which is wondering about the Sovereign and what might be happening to her. This is an effective technique. To me, the Queen is bigger than a person, she represents the state of England and its populations' feelings of their place in the world. As long as she is safe, so is Britain, if she is in peril, so is Britain and subsequently its people are also in peril. The other characters are well developed. Some may say overly so; however, we need to see their motivations for the actions and reactions they take when confronted with this crisis. The author seems to have adequately provided for this. Once again, no one can truly say they know their leaders, one only has a vague impression of them. That is, unless you grew up with the current leader. All in all, I say give this book a look. You shan't be disappointed!Mrs Queen Takes the Train
Any of the above words could be used to describe this easy-to-read novel. The product description, which is what is contained on the back of the book, does an excellent job of describing the book so there is no need for me to give any explanation of plot or story-line.What this story has going for it is the believability of The Queen being a bit depressed and wanting a bit of cheering up. Every decision that is made to propel her into the world outside of the royal cocoon makes sense as you read it and she takes the reader right along with her. None of us knows the true personality of one of the most famous people in the world, but this book does an excellent job of drawing a character that could mirror the woman herself. My mother was the same age as The Queen, and some of the thoughts she has rings very true to that generation and its way of thinking. As she ponders the popularity of Princess Diana and expresses her confusion over the public's response to Elizabeth's stiff upper lip, I was able to grasp exactly why she would be perplexed as the rules of royal behavior have changed during her lift time. This is just one small example of the writing ability as well as the creative mind of the author. Not laugh-out-loud funny (at least for this American), there is a gentle humor and warmth throughout that makes this an enjoyable read and it stands out due to its originality.
