There is a lot of wisdom in literature. I told that to my high school English students back in the 00's, and I tell it to my college students at Rutgers now (I teach in the Social Work and Communication departments). I have also been a therapist since 2004, and I've been treating soldiers and vets during much of that time. Additionally, I served from 1996 to 2004 and then rejoined in 2014 as a medical officer to treat soldiers with PTS, complex trauma and/or substance misuse disorders. I wrote all of this to explain my deep qualifications for reviewing and appreciating Mr. Doerries's work.The author received an amazing classical education in college, where he learned Greek, Latin and Hebrew. He read many ancient religious texts, plays, poems and stories. Because of his experiences with a very sick girlfriend when he was a nascent adult, he developed an early understanding of suffering and death. He was also wracked with questions and doubt about her pain and if he should be glad or miserable when she died - it was a bit of both. He admired her tenacity and courage in the face of her life long illness. He found comfort in the Ancient Greek tragedies - as well as instruction.He has written a remarkable work that addresses PTS, suicide, incarceration (and solitary confinement), and euthanasia. All three sections are wonderfully done, but it is his work on PTS/suicide that is most impressive. I plan on using this in my teaching, counseling and public speaking. I hope I can cross paths with Mr. Doerries.

I hope every literature teacher in the country reads this. It shows the power of literature in capturing the emotions of situations better than any lecture. Through the military chapter you can see the unfortunate timelessness of war. Some of the issues at Alexander's time is the issue armies face today. The book is about what a guy did with his Phd education in the classics. He took that knowledge to market plays to selective audiences. Through the discussion about each play the audience can learn about their own situation. He adapts the Greek play of Ajax for the military, Prometheus for corrections and Heracles for Hospice workers. The best chapter is what he did for the military through the play Ajax. He took a crew and went to over 100 bases. His stories of how the play woke people up to the realities of their own situation is very spell bounding. It really opens up your mind to the whole situation about PTSD. The other chapters aren't quite as good as the military one. That is why I gave it 4 stars.

I could not put this down. I love theatre and believe strongly in its potential therapeutic effects. IT enables us to "hold the mirror up to nature," as Hamlet says. This book demonstrates that statement, and the relevance of great plays which are 2,500 years old to our modern problems. Thank you, Bryan Dowries. This is a story which really needed to be told. "Live long and prosper," as my favorite Vulcan says, and please continue your superb work. For those who wonder -- the author has a strong background in ancient Greek (so he can do good adaptations) and in Latin and Hebrew. I would say, to those with both language and theatrical skills, read and learn and confer with him, work with him, to learn how it is done.

I was lucky that a friend saw the advertisement for a performance and discussion of a scene from the Eumenides a week ago.Attending brought me to this book and gave me an idea of the range of work Mr. Doerries and his troupe perform. From reading it, I see the topics and audiences are wide indeed, and I hope to have further opportunities to engage with this work. The writing is personal and persuasive.

As a clergyman, I found Doerries' transformation of ancient Greek tragedy into modern psychodrama to be fascinating. I hadn't known about the historical setting for these plays, that Sophocles was a military general, for example, or that his audience would have been composed mostly of citizen-soldiers. His work reminded me that all myth--Christian as well as Greek--was created to fulfill a cathartic and healing function in society and that, in the right hands, both theater and worship can purge our spirits of life's traumas and demons. For me, the book was an emotional and intellectual awakening.

Possibly the most moving, inspiring, exciting read of the summer. Finished in a couple of days - riveted to the text and possibilities. As the mother of a career marine who suffers from PTSD, this provided such unexpected insights and hope. It takes a community to heal our wounded souls.
