This book only got me a 99.67 on my pharmacology hesi. I’m not saying it will get you the same grade, but it definitely helped me understand the questions and rationales a little better. 10/10 would recommend lol

Questions hard to understand and follow

First of all, I'm not in the medical profession, nor studying to be a nurse, but pharmacology is a hobby of mine; I have a couple copies of the PDR at home, along with a medical encyclopedia and a med school textbook on migraines, and many more medical books. So far I've read and tried to answer questions in the first three sections and they are overall very good practice questions.The introduction chapter gives test preparation suggestions which are quite good, recommending you write your own study flash-cards for study, as that will help cement the information in your mind. It warns you about knowing both the general classification of a particular medicine, but also the typical use, such as trazadone being an antidepressant, but is more frequently prescribed as a sleep aid. It also gives good pointers for watching for key words in questions, such as whether the patient is male or female, age, etc.The sample questions and their answers are designed well; they give the reasons why the wrong answers are wrong, in addition to the typical explanation of why the correct answer is right.I found two typos in the first couple chapters, where the some of the wrong answer explanations mentioned drugs that were not in the original question; an obvious copy/paste error, but irritating in the final version of the text. I also found one question on a male client with a headache on the right side of his head, been constant for about an hour. The purported answer was he had a cluster headache since those are 5x more prevalent in males, and the question did not mention nausea nor aura symptoms. Well, men can get migraines, and they don't always have nausea, and auras are often not present in migraines. And cluster headaches are typically not one-sided, but affect the entire head.By the way I got a score of 50% on some of the tests; not bad for someone with no formal classroom training....

FA Davis's "Pharmacology Success: NCLEX®-Style Q&A Review" by Kathryn Cadenhead Colgrove RN MS CNS and Christi Doherty DNP MSN RNC-OB CNE is a very straightforward, no-padding question and answer review. It isn't an overview for a person who 'just wants to see if I'm interested in the field' but rather, it is for the student of the field who wants intensive review in the subject. There are bits of humor in the quotes at the beginning of each chapter but the rest is intensive and focused which is much appreciated. One can focus without distraction. There is also FREE access to more questions online for more practice and review.

This book is great in preparing for the NCLEX. This will help you calculate doses quickly and easily. I like that it shows you where you need to focus your study in order to pass the pharmacology portion of the test. It also gives great test taking tips. There are more online questions for further study prep. Great value. Even if you think you are great at pharm, this book will ensure a pass.
