I used this book to prepare for a Disney cruise and just returned. The book includes content that's helpful if you're still just thinking about a Disney cruise (we, like most, I guess, bought it after we had committed).Once you've made your decision to take a Disney cruise, the book is of little help, is full of errors and not at all on par with the writers' excellent guides for Disney parks.Here's a few of the flaws:1. No real insight on shore excursions. The content is largely the same that's available elsewhere or on the Disney site. Since there are a finite number of excursions, I would have expected the authors to collect data for meaningful tips. For example, on our Secret River excursion in Cozumel, it would have been great to know towels were provided (we needlessly carried a day-pack full of four towels all day for nothing), as are water shoes and wetsuits (which you should not decline since the water's cool) and that the trip includes an hour of shopping after the river tour.2. Some bad advice. We were told to bring water shoes to Castaway Cay. Nobody uses water shoes there. The authors talk of kids' fear of being stung by the stingrays but the rays are de-barbed in the stingray adventure. The book says you can order food from any restaurant (not just the one you're at). This isn't the case - in fact, you can't even see the menus. The book suggests to order room service for breakfast on your last day but that's not an option.3. Missing advice and information. There's very little info on alcohol. If you drink, you'll be surprised to find that you can carry your beverage with you anywhere onboard (even a wine glass by the pool). The ship will have a great selection of premium alcohol available but you can't find anything about this on the Disney site (we brought wine with us since we couldn't see acceptable choices on the published lists). If you board early head your kids directly to the water slide while the lines are short. Basically, the sort of inside information you'd expect was simply inadequate.4. Missing upgrade information. A fair number of people will opt for Disney's "Concierge" level. While the book does offer a chapter on this, having just returned, I can tell you their information is incorrect and of little use. I believe the authors have not actually experienced a concierge room. Here's a few points that were missing or incorrect. Contrary to what's in the book, concierge guests cannot order room service breakfast or lunch from a sit-down restaurant (it's dinner only). Contrary to what's in the book, the concierge lounge has a high-end coffee machine that's likely to satisfy anyone. The book doesn't tell you but you should ask the concierge to arrange character visits if that's something you want to do (they have tickets for you).There are more errors and omissions. There's a good FB page for Disney cruises and the authors would be wise to get information from it to lessen the disappointment with this book.

I am a big fan of Len Testa's Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World, and being a frequent Disney cruiser, I was excited to hear Len was bringing his exhaustive coverage and singular wit to Disney Cruise Lines.I am happy to say that if you are a fan of Len's other books or his personality (as heard on numerous Disney Parks podcasts), you get more of the same in this book, in a very good way. Intelligent, funny, and always completely honest, Len, Laurel and Erin give a first-time cruiser a very thorough overview of the multitude of Disney cruises around the world.Len et al freely tells you things that they don't like about the cruises (notably, the port adventures and shopping), but that in turn lends credibility when they tell you about the things they *do* like. If you want nothing but warm-and-fuzzies about DCL, buy the Birmbaum Official Guide, but be prepared for an anemic whitewash of a book that presents DCL as flawless, when it certainly is not so.The only reason I took off a star is because, while the book is full of detail on the ships, it is a little light on detail for the shore excursions. By their own admission, the authors aren't big fans of them; however, I think they should still provide some more detailed coverage, so readers can decide for themselves if a shore excursion is worth trying. Perhaps future editions will contain more detail, when Len & crew have had a chance to sail on more itineraries. If you want really thorough coverage of the shore excursions, consider Dave & Jennifer Marx's Passporter's Guide instead.And where's the Jim Hill Disney Dish?But, in all, this is a great book and a worthy addition to Len's line Unofficial Guide Disney books.

This is a great book - the authors have obviously put countless hours putting this book together. Prior to reading this book I’ve spent hours looking at websites, blogs, listened to podcasts (disneycruiselineblog.com - Scott you’ve done an awesome job!), and I’ve still learned countless perks that will be useful for our upcoming cruise. This book covers it all - ship details, dining, activities, pre-cruise planning, etc.

I enjoy the Unofficial Guides to Walt Disney World, and find the information in those books useful. So I was happy when I saw there was a companion book for Disney Cruise Line. However, while the other books are helpful -- even if I don't necessarily agree with all of the authors' assessments -- this book was waste of money. Do these people even LIKE the cruise ships? It seems like they are very jaded about the experience, and don't enjoy anything. Almost every dining room is compared to a chain restaurant or frozen food, they deem none of the shows worth the time, and essentially complain about everything but the adults-only dining and a few of the bars. There is little to no information about the ports or shore excursions, either. I read this guide before sailing on the Dream, and honestly, it made me nervous about the trip. Fortunately, I found that I disagreed with most of the reviews in the book, and the experience was incredible. I get that the Unofficial Guide prides itself on presenting what they see as the unvarnished truth, and avoids "drinking the Disney Kool-Aid," but this guide just feels like they hated everything and are almost trying to talk you out of taking a cruise. Skip it, and use other guides or online sources if you want to plan a family vacation that isn't all about martinis and haute cuisine.
