Review

"Elizabeth Johnson is by far my favorite contemporary Catholic theologian. In her superb new book, which takes the form of a lively dialogue, she addresses the essential issues of sin, forgiveness and redemption. She does so in her trademark style: with vast learning, sparkling clarity, and breathtaking insights. A signal contribution to modern theology." --James Martin, SJ, author, Jesus: A Pilgrimage "Elizabeth Johnson, as so often she does, names and explains a major obstacle in the presentation of the Gospel message. Here I am happy to say, she unpackages what my own Franciscan school (Francis, Bonaventure, Duns Scotus) believed about the atonement and the salvific meaning of the death of Jesus. It was not a juridical transaction but a cosmic revelation." --Fr. Richard Rohr, O.F.M., Center for Action and Contemplation"To venture new understandings of faith yet to remain deeply rooted in the soil of tradition is signature Elizabeth Johnson. She invites us to consider, what might cosmic redemption mean in our own time? This book delights and agitates. Taking a cue from Anselm's Cur Deus Homo, Johnson imagines a spirited conversation between herself and one of her inquiring, bright students. This book is that conversation. What a journey through Anselm's most celebrated work and then on to a consideration of how the cross might be understood today, particularly in light of the whole natural world. Here again she offers us a theological feast." --Nancy Pineda-Madrid, Boston College

What a challenging book! I'm still trying to deal with older theologies in my mind so that this theology may give the mercy of God full play in my own thinking. It's worth it, and like all of Johnson's books, meticulously argued, this time through a dialogue between Elizabeth and her student, Clara just as Anselm dialogued with his student, Boso in Cur deus homo.

Why did Jesus have to die? A unique interpretation by a very respected theologian that helps tie the ministry of Jesus into his death and explains how his death flows into all of creation and not just men and women. A challenging interpretation, especially in this time of ecological challenge.

Our religious/spiritual book group of 10 years has recently finished reading and discussing Johnson's book, Creation and the Cross: The Mercy of God for a Planet in Peril. This was our 4th. Johnson book. All agree that the title of her work is extremely misleading. 90% of the book is formatted in a conversation Johnson is having with herself and an 'alter ego', Clara, discussing and discovering St. Anselm's reasoning of the saving redemption act for mankind , all created life-forms and the cosmos through the incarnation, life and death of Jesus the Living God. Johnson's dialogue with Clara ( herself ) seems a forced and orchestrated attempt to make a point by answering a question with only one correct response; that of Johnson. The dialogue actually reads as a monologue and this takes away from what a reasonable and genuine conversation might sound like. As one reads deeper into the book this becomes ever more obvious. Our group chose this book as we wanted to explore the intimate link of the death and resurrection of Jesus as it aligns with how we followers of Christ view and respond to a 'Planet in Peril'. Needless to say we were very disappointed and would not recommend this book based on the misleading title. For Johnson, a seasoned and proficient theologian, this work missed the mark.

Simply one of the best, most broad minded but traditionally Christian, works of theology I have ever read. I put it right up there with Loving The Questions. So, if you are tired of attempts to rationalize evil by making suffering and struggling out to be good, this book will seem like fresh oxygen! The book is is actually a Q&A interview with a prominent Catholic bible scholar who has great respect for earth and all its inhabitants regardless of whether they happen to be human. Christian animal welfare and creation care advocates will both appreciate and enjoy this book.

Elizabeth Johnson is a gift. In this book she put's Anselm's satisfaction theory gently to rest and presents us with new ways of understanding how Jesus saves us. Along the way she gives us some valuable insights into Second Isaiah, Wisdom (Sophia), God's powering of evolution, and deep incarnation. My relationship with God is richer for having read this splendid book.

The dialogue format used by Dr. Johnson is most effective in detailing her insight into the meaning of the cross as it relates to the creation story.

This is a brilliant book that overturns longstanding, harmful misinterpretations of the Cross. Johnson once again does the believing world a great good. My life is better for having read it!

Recently sharing the belief in the how and why of the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ with a fundamentalist Christian, I think A simpler format of themed and brief chapters would be more helpful, both for me and her.Basically I agree with the two star review because I am "plowing" though this text with some background of other theological and spiritual writers.
