I have never written a bad review before. However, this book is so politically driven that I am shocked. Of course you would expect some of that from Peter Jennings, but it is over the top. If you are a liberal you will love this book.Many of the hand picked interviews are slanted. The portrayal of life in this country is not what my husband and I have experienced.When I was growing up and today everyone I know is totally cool with the blacks, the whites, the rich and the poor. Yet listening to the news you would think that we ALL hate each other. That's the slant of the book. The evil rich white capitalist have RUINED the world with their greed and lust for power. In my personal opinion that description fits those, like Peter Jennings, in the media much better. I really wanted to be able to use the book with my son for part of his history. However I had to keep researching to find the details of the picture the were left out. Those are the little details that will change the whole perspective on the history picture created.

Wonderful primary source material from people living through a century in American history. I'm using this to supplement my daughter's US history course through her school. It's much more interesting than most history texts.

With life screaming past us sometimes beyond the speed of sound, it is refreshing to find a resource to reflect upon. This is well written, photographed & presented. It suffiently capsulizes important points of history & invites further investigation through out. Recommended/

This book was recommended by a Charlotte Mason Homeschool I belong to. However, the emphasis on certain issues in the 80s and 90s may be troubling for some Christian parents. The narratives in the book are excellent and the book is not boring. There are some tough issues you need to review and be able to talk at length with your children (i.e., AIDS). I don't agree with some of the things emphasized (the OJ Simpson trial) and not mentioned (Pope John Paul's role in Poland's shaking off the yoke of communism and bringing down the iron curtain).

It's fascinating to understand the recent history of our country; it's triumphs, defeats, and how people migrated at different times. Britain and much of Europe are also included regarding WW1 and WW2. What's really cool is that they have first hand accounts from people who were actually there, say living in Britain when the Luftwaffe were bombing the heck out of them. Really easy to read and I would recommend it to middle students on up

It's a wonderful book, with clear summaries of the history of the 20th century, great photos, and it was an incredible bargain, 2nd hand, but like new.

This book does a nice job of giving primary sources that present opposing perspectives of the same event. For example, the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany is told by a young Nazi soldier, a young Polish boy, and an American girl (who saw the Poland exhibit at the New York City World Fair close). However, there is no argument in favor of Nazism here; the young Nazi soldier looks back in horror on the war.For WWII, this book also does a nice job of hopping back and forth between events in Europe and events in America before Pearl Harbor, showing American isolationism in action.The photos make it worth buying the hardback book over the paperback series. I own both. The paperbacks' formatting is hard to follow where the primary sources begin and end, whereas the hardback edition is well done visually.

Very well done and the photos are historic and engaging. My pre-teen son used this for his history course this year and it was his favorite subject.
